Rani Mukherjee (eigentlich Mukhopadhyay, früher in der Schreibweise Mukherjee; Bengalisch: রানী মুখোপাধ্যায়, Rānī Mukhopādhyāẏ; Hindi, रानी मुखर्जी, Rānī Mukharjī, * 21. März 1978 in Kolkata) ist eine indische Schauspielerin und Fotomodell.

Biografie

Rani Mukherjee kommt aus einer bengalischen Familie, die schon lange in der Filmindustrie tätig ist. Ihr Vater ist der Regisseur Ram Mukherjee. Kajol, eine weitere berühmte Schauspielerin, wie auch Kajols Schwester Tanisha Mukherjee, die gerade ihre Karriere beginnt, sind ihre Cousinen. Sie hat einen Bruder, Raja Mukherjee.

Karriere

Ihr erster Film war Byiar Phool, ein bengalischer Film, 1996, der überhaupt keine Aufmerksamkeit erlangte. Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat im Jahr 1996 war ihr zweiter Film, der so schwer scheitertete, dass die Schauspielerin bereit war auf ihre Karriere zu verzichten. An der Seite von Aamir Khan konnte sie in Ghulam die Aufmerksamkeit des Publikums auf sich ziehen. Als beste Nebendarstellerin prämierte die Filmfare Rani für ihre Rolle in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998). Fast schien sie nach diesem Erfolg wieder von der Bildfläche zu verschwinden, bis sie an der Seite von Salman Khan im Film Chori Chori Chupke Chupke spielte. Im erfolgreichen Film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham konnte sie sich mit einem Gastauftritt wieder in die Erinnerung der Zuschauer spielen.

Für das Sequel des Mani-Ratnam-Films Alaipayuthey, der in der Hindifassung als Saathiya veröffentlicht wurde, konnte sie den Kritikerpreis für die Beste Darbietung bei den Filmfare Awards gewinnen.

Seit 2004 ist fast jedes Projekt mit Rani in der Hauptrolle ein Hit. Für ihre Rolle in Mani Ratnams Yuva konnte sie gemeinsam mit Abhishek Bachchan wieder Auszeichnungen entgegennehmen. Die Filme Hum Tum, Veer-Zaara, Bunty Aur Babli waren Kassenerfolge. Auch ihre Darstellung in Mangal Pandey und Paheli an der Seite der beiden großen indischen Schauspieler Aamir Khan und Shahrukh Khan sind beachtenswert. Für ihre Rolle in der Helen-Keller-Verfilmung Black konnte sie großen Kritikerzuspruch erfahren.

Über ihr Privatleben ist nicht viel bekannt: Obwohl die Bollywood-Klatschspalten ihr gerne Affären mit allen ihren männlichen Co-Stars andichten, betont Rani, dass ihre ganze Energie gegenwärtig in ihre Karriere gesteckt wird.

Rani Mukherjee ist auch in vielen Ländern der Welt auf Shahrukh Khans Welttournee Temptations 2004 aufgetreten.
