Rachael Anne Finch was born in Sydney but raised in Townsville, north of Queensland. She grew up playing sport on the weekends and going on camping trips with the family on the holidays. Throughout her childhood, Rachael stated that “sport had a great influence on my life and some of my fondest memories are days spent with my teammates at the touch (football) fields or alongside the running track”. Growing up in regional Queensland, Rachael said it, “enabled me to appreciate the rural communities and their beautiful surroundings from a young age”. Water skiing has been a part of her family for many years and when Rachael gets home to Townsville she says “Going out for a ski is on the to-do list!”
Rachael attended Ryan Catholic College throughout her schooling life and graduated in 2005 with an Overall Position of 7. She had planned on studying a degree in Business or Events Management at University while doing part-time work.
In 2004 Rachael entered and won the Queensland Model of the Year title at the annual Fashion Bash. This quickly led to having expressed interest in the fashion industry, but said she “wanted to complete my schooling before starting a modeling career”. She made her international debut when she flew to New Zealand for a 3 month modeling contract in 2006 and throughout 2007-08 worked in Singapore, New York, Germany and Australia. Rachael has appeared in some of the most well-known magazines around the world such as Cleo, Seventeen and Grazia. She has worked for brands including Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Max & Co and has appeared in campaigns for Jets Swimwear, Deep Spring and Coca Cola. Rachael recalls her experiences around the world as “like no other” and says she “will never forget moments like riding a motorbike from the top of Deer Park Heights in Queenstown to shoot a television commercial”.
In between her modeling work, Rachael returned to her beginnings at the Fashion Bash to volunteer her time to assist in organizing the event and said she “believes a competition like the Fashion Bash deserves recognition and respect for giving young people living in regional Queensland the opportunity to persue careers in the (fashion) industry”. By 2008 Rachael compeered the event, was appointed sponsorship manager, worked as media representative and co-organised the event. She also presented a television documentary for the Fashion Bash and states “My experience in presenting the Fashion Bash documentary has led me to now focus a career in television. There is a magical feeling that exists when presenting, especially something you are passionate about”.
Rachael completed a television presenting course at the Sydney Academy of Film and Television in November 2008 which subsequently led to her presenting a segment on foxtels EWTV, covering Sydney’s Earth Festival.
Rachael was crowned Miss Universe Australia on April 22nd, 2009 at the Hilton in Sydney. Her life since winning has not been the same and she describes her life now as “surreal” and she “feels so blessed to have been given this rare opportunity to make a positive impact on the world”. Rachael wants to accomplish a long list of goals throughout her life, with producing and presenting her own lifestyle show as one of them.
As Miss Universe Australia I am so proud to be able to represent Australia on the world stage and live as an ambassador for our beautiful country. Travelling the world as a model has taught me a lot about culture and independence from a young age and I will never let the desire within me to continue learning fade. I don’t believe anything is impossible and if you want to achieve something in life than go for it with all of your heart! Look after your mind, body and soul through health and fitness and surround yourself with optimism. I cannot wait for the journey I am about to begin and I must say that I certainly couldn’t have made it without my family and friends.
