Phoebe Cates (* 16. Juli 1963 in New York als Phoebe Belle Katz) ist eine US-amerikanische Schauspielerin.


Schon mit 16 arbeitete Phoebe regelmäßig als Model und erschien auf den Titelseiten von Jugend-Zeitschriften. Ihr Filmdebüt gab sie 1982 mit 19 Jahren in dem Film Das Blaue Paradies (Paradise). Vater Joseph Cates, ein bekannter New Yorker Fernsehproduzent, war dagegen, als sie die Rolle annahm, weil Phoebe ihr letztes Schuljahr wegen des Films unterbrechen musste – sie hat die High School nie abgeschlossen.

Nach dem Blauen Paradies wuchs sie in die Teeniefilmerfolge Ich glaub', ich steh' im Wald und Private School hinein. Durch ihren unkomplizierten Jungmädchentyp, der einen Kontrast zu ihrem dunklen Teint und dem schwarzen Haar bildet, das sie von ihrer chinesischen Mutter geerbt hat, hob sie sich aus der Masse der Jungschauspielerinnen hervor.

1983 bewarb sie sich vergeblich für eine Rolle in dem Film Der große Frust. Dabei hat sie den Schauspieler Kevin Kline kennengelernt, mit dem sie später zusammenzog. Sie heirateten 1989 und haben drei Kinder, Sohn Owen, Tochter Greta Simone und Tochter Autumn Bell.
