Allen hat portugiesische und irische Vorfahren. Sie studierte am Austin Community College in Austin, Texas und wurde zunächst Erzieherin in einem Kindergarten.

Allen debütierte im Jahr 1994 in einer Hauptrolle in der Serie der SF-Fernsehfilme Emmanuelle, wobei es sich jedoch nicht um die Emmanuelle-Filme mit Sylvia Kristel handelt. Danach trat sie in einzelnen Folgen der Fernsehserien wie Eine schrecklich nette Familie (im Jahr 1996) auf.

Allen spielte im Actionfilm Raven Team (1997) an der Seite von Burt Reynolds eine der größeren Rollen. Im Filmdrama Der Tod kennt keine Freundschaft (2001) war sie in einer der Hauptrollen zu sehen. Sie übernahm in der Komödie Total blond (2001) die Hauptrolle. Sie trat in den Jahren 2000 und 2001 ebenfalls in einigen Folgen der Fernsehserien Baywatch, CSI – Den Tätern auf der Spur und Charmed – Zauberhafte Hexen auf. Seit 2006 spielt sie in der Serie What about Brian mit.

Im preisgekrönten Filmdrama Geständnisse – Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002) spielte sie neben Drew Barrymore, George Clooney, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt und Julia Roberts. In der Komödie Die Wutprobe (2003) trat sie an der Seite von Adam Sandler, Jack Nicholson und Marisa Tomei auf. Später übernahm sie eine der Hauptrollen in der Horrorkomödie Feast (2005).

Allen war in den Jahren 1996 bis 1999 mit dem Produktionsmanager Justin Moritt verheiratet. Sie hat einen im Jahr 1997 geborenen Sohn.
