Anne Meara ( born 20. September 1929 in New York City; died 23. Mai 2015 ) war eine US-amerikanische Schauspielerin und Komikerin.
Sie war mit dem Komiker Jerry Stiller verheiratet, mit dem sie die Kinder Ben Stiller und Amy Stiller bekam, die ebenfalls als Schauspieler tätig sind.
Meara wurde 1929 als Tochter von Marry Meara ( geb. Dempsey ) und Edward Joseph Meara in Queens, New York City, geboren.
Als sie elf Jahre alt war, tötete ihre Mutter sich selbst; infolgedessen war sie bis Mitte der 1980er Jahre in psychologischer Behandlung.
Sie wurde katholisch erzogen, konvertierte jedoch, sechs Jahre nach ihrer Hochzeit 1954 mit Jerry Stiller, zum Judentum,
wobei sie immer wieder betonte, dass dies keine Bitte oder Forderung ihres Gatten gewesen sei.
Comedy team
Meara met actor-comedian Jerry Stiller in 1953 and they married the following year.
Until he suggested it, she had never thought of doing comedy.
"Jerry started us being a comedy team," she said. "He always thought I would be a great comedy partner."
They joined the improvisational company The Compass Players ( which later became The Second City ), and after leaving,
formed the comedy team of Stiller and Meara. In 1961 they were performing in nightclubs in New York,
and by the following year were considered a "national phenomenon," writes the New York Times.
Their often-improvised comedy routines brought many of their real-life relationship foibles to live audiences.
Their skits focused on domestic themes, as did Nichols and May, another comedy team during that period.
"They were Nichols and May without the acid and with warmth," notes author Lawrence Epstein.
They added a new twist to their comedy act, he adds, by sometimes playing up the fact that Stiller was Jewish and Meara was Catholic.
After some years honing the act, Stiller and Meara became regulars on The Ed Sullivan Show and other TV programs,
including The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.
Their career as a comedy team eventually declined, however, as variety shows gradually disappeared.
Von 1979 bis 1982 spielte sie die Figur Veronica Rooney in der amerikanischen Sitcom Archie Bunker’s Place.
Nach den ersten drei Staffeln stieg sie aus der Serie aus.
Bevor sie anfing, in verschiedenen populären Serien Amerikas gelegentlich Gastrollen zu übernehmen,
spielte sie in einigen Filmen mit, beispielsweise 1980 in Fame – Der Weg zum Ruhm oder 1995 in Kiss of Death.
Dem deutschen Publikum wurde sie vornehmlich durch
Gastrollen in den Serien Alf ( als Dorothy Halligan, der Mutter von Kate Tanner ),
King of Queens ( als Veronica Olchin, Mutter von Spence Olchin ) und
Sex and the City ( als Mary Brady, Mutter von Steve Brady ) bekannt.
Anne Meara starb am 23. Mai 2015 in Manhattan, wie die Familie in einer Mitteilung bekannt gab.
