April Jeanette Mendez / AJ Lee
 

April Jeanette Mendez (* 19. März 1987 in Union City, New Jersey) ist eine US-amerikanische Wrestlerin, die zur Zeit bei der WWE unter Vertrag steht.

Ihr Bruder brachte sie auf den Geschmack, Wrestling zu schauen und später selbst zu betreiben. Nach ihrem Abitur arbeitete sie als Hausmeisterin in einer Kindertagesstätte, als Kassiererin und als Sekretärin, um Geld für eine Ausbildung zur professionellen Wrestlerin zu bekommen. Einen Teil des Geldes gab sie ihrer Familie, da diese finanzielle Schwierigkeiten hatte. Aufgrund von Geldmangel beendete Mendez ihr Studium an der Tisch School of the Arts in der New York University.

Nachdem sie die Universität verließ, schrieb sie sich an einer Wrestling-Schule, eine Meile von ihrem Elternhaus entfernt, ein. Sie trainierte ein halbes Jahr lang. Meistens tat sie dies in einem Militäranzug, da zur gleichen Zeit ihr Bruder bei der Armee war. 2007 debütierte sie als Miss April.

Am 10. Oktober 2008 debütierte Mendes als Miss April bei der Promotion Women Superstars Uncensored (WSU) und verlor gegen Soul Sister Jana in einem Einzel-Match. Im Februar 2009 konnte sie gemeinsam mit Brooke Carter die Beatdown Betties besiegen und gewann die WSU Tag Team Championship.

Am 5. Mai 2009 unterzeichnete Mendez einen Vertrag mit World Wrestling Entertainment. Mendez bestritt ihr erstes Match für die FCW am 14. August 2009 unter dem Namen „April Lee“. Im September 2009 wurde ihr Ringname in „AJ Lee“ geändert. Sie kämpfte um den Titel der Queen of FCW und besiegte bei den TV-Tapings am 4. Februar 2010 Serena um diesen zu gewinnen.
