Beyoncé Knowles kam 1981 als erstes Kind von Mathew Knowles und Tina Beyince in Houston, Texas zur Welt. Ihre jüngere Schwester ist die Schauspielerin und Sängerin Solange Knowles. Beyoncés musikalisches Talent wurde bereits in jungen Jahren von der High School for Performing and Visual Arts in Houston mit professionellen Tanz- und Gesangsunterricht gefördert. Später machte sie sowohl als Solistin im örtlichen Kirchenchor als auch als Gewinnerin von über 30 Talentwettbewerben auf sich aufmerksam.

1990 gründete Knowles gemeinsam mit LaTavia Roberson und ihren Schulfreundinnen Kelly Rowland, LeToya Luckett, Keke Wyatt und Ashley Támar Davis die Tanz- und Gesangsgruppe Girls Tyme. Gemanaged von Vater Mathew, gelang es der Band im Laufe der Jahre durch zahlreiche Auftritte in Einkaufszentren oder bei Gesangswettbewerben (darunter auch das TV-Format Star Search) auf lokaler Ebene bekannt zu werden. Als ein Plattenvertrag mit Elektra Records bevorstand, änderte man den Namen der Gruppe - die fortan aus dem Quartett Knowles, Rowland, Luckett und Roberson bestand - in Destiny's Child.
