Für ihre Rolle in Boys Don't Cry wurde sie sowohl für den Oscar als auch für den Golden Globe nominiert. Sevigny zog bereits als Teenager nach New York.

Vor ihrer Filmkarriere arbeitete sie als Model für H&M und das Label X-Girl der Sonic Youth-Frontfrau Kim Gordon. Entdeckt wurde Sevigny auf der Straße wegen ihres berühmten Modestils als Redakteurin für das Teen-Magazin Sassy. Ihr schauspielerisches Debüt gab sie in dem Film Kids von Skandalfilmer Larry Clark. Seither hat sie in insgesamt 23 Spielfilmen mitgespielt.

Viel Aufsehen erhielt sie für den Film The Brown Bunny in dem sie eine Oralsex-Szene mit ihrem damaligen Liebhaber Vincent Gallo spielt, die in den USA für Proteste sorgte.

Ihr Ex-Lebensgefährte ist der Regisseur und Drehbuchautor Harmony Korine, bekannt für das Drehbuch von Kids. Mit ihm arbeitete sie auch 1997 an Gummo.

Ihr Bruder Paul ist ein bekannter New Yorker DJ. Sie selbst lebt immer noch in New York. Ihr Freund ist der Rockmusiker Matt McAuley von A.R.E. Weapons, zu deren Bandmitgliedern wiederum ihr Bruder zählt. Ihren größten Erfolg feierte sie an der Seite von Hilary Swank in der Geschlechter- und White-Trash-Studie Boy's Don't Cry von Kimberly Pierce aus dem Jahr 1999
