Shakira (* 2. Februar 1977 in Barranquilla, Kolumbien; eigentlich Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll) ist eine kolumbianische Pop- und Rock-Sängerin und Songwriterin. Zu Beginn ihrer Karriere sang sie auf Spanisch und hatte damit in Lateinamerika und Spanien Erfolg. Ihr erstes englischsprachiges Album machte sie zu einem globalen Popstar. Insgesamt hat sie über 40 Millionen Tonträger verkauft.

Shakira setzt sich für soziale Projekte ein, besonders für Straßenkinder in ihrer Heimat.

Shakiras Vater Don William Mebarak Chadid, der hauptberuflich als Juwelier arbeitet und nebenbei Bücher schreibt, ist ein gebürtiger New Yorker libanesischer Herkunft, ihre Mutter Nidia del Carmen Ripoll Torrado ist gebürtige Kolumbianerin mit katalanischen Wurzeln. Shakira ist ihr einziges gemeinsames Kind, "Shakira" bedeutet auf arabisch (شاكِرة) "die Dankbare".

Don William Mebarak Chadid hat aus einer geschiedenen ersten Ehe bereits acht Kinder, zu denen Shakira familiären Kontakt pflegt. Shakira wuchs im Elternhaus dreisprachig auf. Im Alter von 17 Jahren zog sie mit ihrer Familie nach Bogotá um.

Sie verließ Kolumbien und zog in die USA nach Florida, in die Nähe von Gloria Estefan und deren Mann, die zwei Alben für Shakira produzierten. Seitdem sie in Miami auf Grund ihres Erfolges und ihrer Berühmtheit keine Ruhe mehr fand, lebt Shakira heute auf den Bahamas.

Seit dem Jahr 2000 ist Shakira mit Antonio de la Rúa, dem Sohn des ehemaligen argentinischen Staatspräsidenten Fernando de la Rúa liiert; im März 2001 verlobten sie sich.
