Amy Macdonald (* 25. August 1987 in Bishopbriggs, East Dunbartonshire, Schottland) ist eine britische Singer-Songwriterin.


Leben
Im Alter von 15 Jahren begann sie – wesentlich beeinflusst von Travis und The Libertines – Akustikgitarre zu spielen. Als Schlüsselerlebnis für ihre Karriere bezeichnet sie einen Auftritt von Pete Doherty in Glasgow:

„Es war eine super Show. […] Ein paar Freunde und ich ließen nachher die Gitarre ’rumgehen und spielten spontan Songs, die uns gefielen. Da wusste ich, dass ich Musikerin werden möchte.“


Nachdem sie im Juli 2007 mit dem Titel Mr Rock & Roll bereits einen Achtungserfolg in Großbritannien landen konnte (Platz 12 der UK Top 40), konnte die Autodidaktin Macdonald, die im Herbst 2007 Paul Weller auf seiner Deutschland-Tournee begleitete,[2] mit dem Debütalbum This Is the Life Anfang 2008 Platz 1 der UK-Charts erreichen und erhielt mittlerweile Zweifach-Platin-Status.

Amy Macdonald sagte in Interviews, ihre Texte basierten auf Situationen und Begebenheiten des echten Lebens. Ihr Lied Footballer’s Wife spiegelt die Besessenheit britischer Boulevardzeitungen wider, während Poison Prince die Drogenabhängigkeit von Doherty[3] thematisiert. Ihr Song Barrowland Ballroom bezieht sich auf den gleichnamigen Veranstaltungsort in Glasgow. L.A. handelt von ihrer Begeisterung für Jake Gyllenhaal.[4]
