Bandgeschichte [

1998–2001: Anfängliche Karriere

Die Gruppe wurde im September 1998 von Andy McCluskey (OMD) gebildet. Der Bandname leitete sich vom Modelabel Automatic Kitten ab. Ursprünglich hieß die Band Honeyhead und war mit Liz McClarnon, Kerry Katona und der späteren Sugababes-Sängerin Heidi Range besetzt; diese wurde im Mai 1999 jedoch durch die damals 16-jährige Natasha Hamilton abgelöst. Während die Gruppe anfangs nur in ihrer Heimat achtbare Erfolge erzielen konnten (im Dezember 1999 folgte mit Right Now die erste Top-Ten-Platzierung in den britischen Single-Charts), gelang ihnen 2001 mit der Hitsingle Whole Again auch im deutschsprachigen Raum der Durchbruch. Das Lied erreichte sowohl in England, Deutschland und Österreich im Sommer 2001 Platz 1 der Singlecharts; konnte sich in Deutschland sogar 6 Wochen lang auf der Eins halten. Von Whole Again gibt es zudem zwei Versionen, da das Bandmitglied Kerry Katona (Schwangerschaft) im Sommer 2001 durch Jenny Frost abgelöst wurde.
