Als Tochter eines Offiziers der amerikanischen Armee kam Ciara bereits als Kind viel um die Welt. So wuchs sie unter anderem in New York, Kalifornien, Arizona und Nevada auf; in jüngeren Jahren lebte sie eine Zeit lang in Gießen, Deutschland und ging in Wetzlar zur Schule (einem Nachbarort von Gießen).

Da ihre Eltern Carlton und Jackie ihr gesangliches Talent früh erkannten, förderten sie sie bereits in ihrer Kindheit. Sie verbrachte ihre Jugendzeit vor allem mit Studioaufnahmen oder kleineren Bühnenauftritten. Für einige Zeit war sie Mitglied einer dreiköpfigen Girlband.

2003 unterschrieb sie solo ihren ersten Plattenvertrag bei LaFace Records. Darauf folgend komponierte und produzierte sie innerhalb eines Jahres mit Musikgrößen wie Jazze Pha, Missy Elliott, Ludacris, Dre & Vidal und R. Kelly ihr Debütalbum Goodies, welches am 28. September 2004 in den U.S.A. veröffentlicht wurde. Die gleichnamige erste Singleauskopplung, produziert von Lil' Jon, erklomm weltweit die Charts (unter anderem Platz #1 in den Staaten) und verlieh ihr den Titel der „Princess of Crunk“.

2005 wurde Ciara für ihre Arbeit mit Soul Train Awards in den Kategorien „Female Entertainer of the Year“, sowie „Best New R&B Artist“ gekürt. Des Weiteren war sie als „Beste Newcomerin“ für den Grammy nominiert. Mit Missy Elliotts „Lose Control“, Bow Wows „Like You“ und Field Mobs „So What“ war sie zugleich drei weitere Male erfolgreich in den Charts vertreten.

Im August 2006 steuerte Ciara mit dem Titel „Get Up“ den Titelsong zum Tanzfilm Step Up bei. Zeitgleich begann sie gemeinsam mit den Produzenten Rodney „Darkchild“ Jerkins, Jazze Pha, Lil' Jon, Pharrell Williams, Polow Da Don und Sean Garrett die Arbeiten an ihrem zweiten Album Ciara: The Evolution, dessen Veröffentlichung in den USA im Dezember 2006 folgte. Das Album stieg in den amerikanischen Album-Charts direkt auf #1 ein und brachte mit der Mid-Tempo-Ballade „Promise“ einen weiteren Top-Ten-Hit hervor. Im Ausland erschien das Album im April 2007 auf dem Markt, angeführt von der internationalen Lead-Single „Like a Boy“.
