Kelly Brianne Clarkson (* 24. April 1982 in Fort Worth, Texas) ist eine US-amerikanische Popsängerin.

Sie gewann 2002 die erste Staffel der erfolgreichen Castingshow American Idol.

Kelly Brianne Clarkson wurde in Fort Worth/Texas geboren, lebt aber bis heute in Burleson/Texas. Sie hat zwei ältere Geschwister, Bruder Jason und Schwester Alyssa. Als sie sechs Jahre alt war, ließen sich ihre Eltern scheiden, sie wohnte danach bei ihrer Mutter. Im Laufe ihrer Kindheit lernte Clarkson Klavier und Geige zu spielen. In der Mittelschule wurde sie auf Anraten eines Lehrers Mitglied im Schulchor, woraufhin sie sich für eine Musikkarriere zu interessieren begann.
Nach dem Abschluss der High School zog sie mit einer Freundin nach Los Angeles, spielte dort kleinere Rollen beim Fernsehen und arbeitete kurz mit dem Songwriter Gerry Goffin zusammen. Nachdem Goffin jedoch erkrankte und ihr Apartment ausbrannte, kehrte sie mittellos nach Texas zurück und war danach in den verschiedensten Berufen (im Zoo, als Platzanweiserin, als Werberin für Red Bull, als Cocktail-Kellnerin etc.) tätig. Ihre ersten Rollen übernahm sie als Animateurin in einem Vergnügungspark, als sie in einer Westernshow in einer Saloonszene mitspielte.
2002 bewarb Clarkson sich auf Drängen ihrer Freundin Jessica Hugghins, die ihr auch das Geld für die Anreise zum Vorsingen nach Dallas lieh (und dafür später mit einer Chevrolet Corvette belohnt wurde), für eine Teilnahme an American Idol (der amerikanischen Version von Deutschland sucht den Superstar) und wurde unter 10.000 Bewerbern als eine von 30 Teilnehmern für die zweite Runde ausgewählt. Mit ihrem ersten Auftritt in der TV-Show mit dem Titel Respect eroberte sie sofort die Herzen von Millionen Zuschauern. Nie wieder bekam ein Kandidat so viele Stimmen für einen Auftritt. Damit kam sie unter die zehn Teilnehmer der eigentlichen Fernsehshow. Clarkson war als Einzige nie unter den drei schlechtesten Kandidaten. Am 4. September 2002 gewann sie die letzte American Idol-Show mit 58 % der Zuschauerstimmen gegen Justin Guarini.
