Marisa Tomei wurde am 04.12.1964 im New Yorker Stadtteil Brooklyn geboren. Als ihr 1983 eine Rolle in der TV-Serie "As the World Turns" angeboten wird bricht sie dafür ihr Studium an der Boston University nach nur einem Jahr ab. Diese Rolle bringt ihr schon bald (1984) ihre erste, wenn auch kleine, Filmrolle in "Flamingo Kid".

Ihren Durchbruch schafft Marisa Tomei 1992 mit ihrer Rolle in "Mein Vetter Winnie", für die sie einen Oscar als beste Nebendarstellerin bekommt. In der Folge war Marisa Tomei in vielen erfolgreichen Filmen wie z.B. "Was Frauen wollen", "Die Wutprobe" oder "Alfie" zu sehen, für ihre Rolle in "In the Bedroom" wurde sie 2001 erneut für den Oscar als beste Nebendarstellerin nominiert.
