Leona Louise Lewis (* 3. April 1985 in Islington, London) ist eine britische Sängerin und Songschreiberin. Bekannt wurde sie Ende 2006 mit dem Gewinn der dritten Staffel der Castingshow The X Factor, die zwischen August und Dezember 2006 vom britischen Fernsehsender ITV ausgestrahlt wurde.

Werdegang

Lewis wurde als zweites von drei Kindern des Ehepaares Joe und Maria Lewis geboren und wuchs im Norden von London auf. Schon als Kind zeigte sie ihr musikalisches Können. Im Alter von 12 Jahren schrieb sie ihren ersten eigenen Song, mit 13 Jahren gewann sie den Lady-D-Nachwuchswettbewerb im Hackney Empire. Zur Entfaltung ihres Talents besuchte sie die Sylvia Young Stage School und die Brit Academy. Bereits vor ihrer Teilnahme an The X Factor nahm sie unter dem Titel Twilight ein erstes Album auf, das jedoch nie veröffentlicht wurde.

Im Sommer 2006 nahm sie an einem Vorsingen für die dritte Staffel der Castingshow The X Factor teil. Unterstützt von ihrem Mentor Simon Cowell kämpfte sie sich ab dem 19. August 2006 durch zahlreiche Qualifikationsrunden. Schließlich setzte sie sich in der Finalshow am 16. Dezember 2006 gegen ihren Konkurrenten Raymond Quinn durch und erhielt einen mit einer Million Britischen Pfund dotierten Plattenvertrag bei Sony BMG. Von den über acht Millionen abgegebenen Stimmen entfielen 60 Prozent auf Lewis.

Vier Tage nach dem Finale erschien in der Woche vor Weihnachten in Großbritannien Lewis' Debütsingle A Moment Like This. Schon vor Ausstrahlung des Finales kam sie auf eine Million Vorbestellungen. Mit der Bereitstellung im elektronischen Downloadformat einen Tag nach dem Finale wurde die Single binnen 30 Minuten 50.000 Mal heruntergeladen.
