Michaela May nahm ab dem siebten Lebensjahr Ballettunterricht und stand schon als 10-Jährige in einem Kinderballett auf der Bühne. Als Gertraud Mittermayr hatte sie ihr Leinwanddebüt 1965 in Onkel Toms Hütte unter Géza von Radványi. Sie absolvierte nach dem Abitur eine Lehre als Kindergärtnerin und besuchte nebenbei eine Schauspielschule. 1967 trat sie in einer Fernsehserie als Tänzerin auf.

Danach konnte sie ihre Laufbahn als Schauspielerin zunächst am Theater fortsetzen. 1970 gab sie an der Komödie Berlin ihr Bühnendebüt und trat dort 1972 in Eine Hand voll Brennesseln von Sauvajon auf. In München spielte sie unter anderem in dem Psychothriller Gaslicht in der Komödie im Bayerischen Hof. Mit der Fernsehserie Münchner Geschichten etablierte sie sich ab 1974 als vielbeschäftigte Seriendarstellerin.

Michaela May heiratete 1980 den Wirtschaftsanwalt Dr. Jack Schiffer, mit dem sie zwei Töchter (geb. 1982 und 1988) hat. 2006 heiratete sie in zweiter Ehe den Regisseur Bernd Schadewald.

Michaela May lebt in München.
