Standard Ella Henderson

Gabriella Michelle "Ella" Henderson[1] (born 12 January 1996)[2] is a British singer-songwriter. She was a finalist on the ninth series of The X Factor in 2012 and finished in sixth place,[3] despite being a strong favourite to win.[4] She was subsequently signed to Syco Music.[5] Her debut album is due for release March 2014.[6]

Early life

Henderson was born and raised in Tetney, near Grimsby, to parents Sean and Michelle; she has two brothers called Patrick and Fraser and a sister called Holly.[7]

Henderson began singing at the age of three and taught herself to play the piano a few years later. She began to put on shows for her family at Christmas and developed a special bond with her grandfather Bill, who encouraged her to pursue her love of music and songwriting.[8] Her interest developed further at primary school, St Martin’s Preparatory School in Grimsby, and she subsequently decided to audition for a scholarship place at Tring Park School for the Performing Arts in Hertfordshire. She succeeded in gaining a scholarship and boarded at the school from the age of 11 to 16. She attended the school at the same time as Dan Ferrari-Lane of boy band District3.[9]

She also developed a keen interest in fashion in her youth, notably vintage fashion, which she retains.[10]

In early 2012, Henderson made a singing appearance on a celebrity Christmas special of Channel 4's Come Dine with Me, where she performed "All I Want for Christmas Is You".[11] She was a guest of Bianca Gascoigne, who is a family friend[12] and also auditioned for The X Factor in 2012.[13] The episode was filmed before Henderson's X Factor appearance.

Career

The X Factor
Main article: The X Factor (UK series 9)

In 2012, Henderson auditioned for series 9 of The X Factor. She reached the live shows and was mentored by Tulisa Contostavlos. Henderson and James Arthur were in the bottom two in week 7 and sung for survival, after which the judges were split on who should go. The decision went to "deadlock" and the public votes cast. Arthur got through after gaining 13.7% of the vote to Henderson's 12.1%.[14] The exit was described as "one of the biggest shocks we've ever had on the results show." by presenter Dermot O'Leary.[3]

During the show and following her exit, a number of celebrities came out in support and praise of Henderson, including Adele, Chloe Moretz, Simon Cowell, Sarah Millican, Kitty Brucknell, Stephen Fry, Lily Allen, Nick Grimshaw and Cher.[15][16] In 2013, O'Leary, on The Xtra Factor in 2013, named Henderson as the most talented performer in his seven years on the show, in his view.[17]

It's 'going to represent me and who I am, and let everybody know who I am as a person'. She also hinted that the album would include upbeat songs as well as ballads and 'the Ella sound' may surprise some.[24][25]

It has been reported that the album is now scheduled for release March 2014.[26][27]

The album will be written by Henderson, working in collaboration with a number of writers and producers including: Claude Kelly[28] (former collaborations include Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson, Jessie J, Michael Jackson), Camille Purcell ("What About Us" by The Saturdays, "Nothing Feels Like You" by Little Mix and "Hero" by Jessie J), Eg White (Adele, Tom Odell, Will Young, Kris Allen, Duffy, James Morrison)[29] and TMS (Professor Green and Emeli Sandé "Read All About It" and Little Mix "Wings").
