Jeden Winter wird die einsam gelegene Stadt Barrow in Alaska 30 Tage lang in völlige Finsternis getaucht. Während der Polarnacht verreisen die meisten Einwohner in den Süden. Das hätten sie diesen Winter besser früher getan: Eine mysteriöse Gruppe Fremder taucht auf und legt erst im verborgenem alle Verbindungen zur Aussenwelt lahm. Die Fremden enpuppen sich dann als blutrünstige Vampirbrut. Die Nachtwesen haben alle Vorteile auf ihrer Seite, die Einwohner auszusaugen. Nur Sheriff Eben (Josh Hartnett) und seine Noch-Ehefrau Stella (Melissa George) und ein paar Nachbarn stellen sich ihnen entgegen und versuchen bis zum ersten Tageslicht zu überleben.
