Katy Perry (* 25. Oktober 1984 in Santa Barbara, Kalifornien; eigentlicher Name Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson) ist eine US-amerikanische Sängerin und Songschreiberin. Weltweit bekannt wurde sie durch ihren Hit I Kissed a Girl.
Die Liebe zur Musik entdeckte die Pastorentochter während eines Kirchenfestes, da ihr Onkel sie dazu brachte, im örtlichen Gospelchor mitzusingen.[1] Später entdeckte sie die Band Queen für sich und war sofort von der Stimme des Frontmannes Freddie Mercury begeistert („Als ich zum ersten Mal [seine] Stimme hörte, war es, als ob sich der Himmel öffnet.“).[2]
Im Jahr 2001 erhielt Perry einen Vertrag mit dem Label Red Hill Records. Kurz darauf veröffentlichte sie unter ihrem richtigen Namen Katy Hudson das gleichnamige Debütalbum, welches aber kommerziell erfolglos blieb, obwohl es „breiten Anklang in der christlichen Musikszene“[1] fand. Nach dem Erscheinen ihres ersten Albums änderte sie ihren Künstlernamen auf den Geburtsnamen ihrer Mutter ab, um zukünftig nicht mehr mit der Schauspielerin Kate Hudson verwechselt zu werden.
2004 arbeitete Perry für das Label The Matrix, wobei sie die Arbeit an ihrem ersten Mainstream-Album begann, das 2005 erscheinen sollte. Einige der Titel wurden auf ihrer offiziellen MySpace-Seite veröffentlicht und Simple ist auf dem Soundtrack von Eine für 4 enthalten.[3] In der Musikmetropole Nashville lernte sie den Produzenten Glen Ballard kennen, der auch schon für No Doubt tätig gewesen ist. Dieser förderte gezielt ihr Talent und stand ihr bei den ersten professionellen Aufnahmen mit Rat und Tat zur Seite.[2] Von da an geriet Perry immer mehr ins Blickfeld der einflussreichen Produktionsfirmen, wie beispielsweise Capitol Records, und der Medien.
Im Jahr 2005 machte sie im Videoclip Cupid’s Chokehold von den Gym Class Heroes auf sich aufmerksam,[4] wo sie die Freundin von Leadsänger Travis McCoy spielt. Auch privat waren die beiden drei Jahre lang ein Paar, bis sie sich 2008 voneinander trennten. Seit September 2009 ist sie mit Russell Brand, dem britischen Comedian zusammen.
Perry gelangte 2007 zu einer breiten Bekanntheit mit dem Internet- und Radioplay-Hit Ur So Gay. Im Mai 2008 wurde die erste Single I Kissed a Girl aus ihrem nachfolgenden Album One of the Boys in den USA veröffentlicht, welches sie dort auch auf der Warped Tour vorstellte. So erreichte der Titel Platz 1 in Kanada und im Juni auch die Spitze der US-amerikanischen und australischen Charts.[5] Am 1. August wurde der Titel auch in Deutschland veröffentlicht und stieg auf Platz 2 der Media-Control-Single-Charts ein.[6] In der dritten Woche eroberte der Song auch in Deutschland Platz 1. Mitte September wurde das Album One of the Boys veröffentlicht. Als zweite Single folgte der Song Hot N Cold, der am 22. November 2008 als erster reiner Download-Titel den Charteinstieg auf Position 2 in Deutschland schaffte.[7] Mit der Veröffentlichung als CD erreichte Hot N Cold eine Woche später die Spitze der deutschen Charts und konnte sich dort acht Wochen durchgehend aufhalten. Damit wurde der Erfolg von I Kissed a Girl in Deutschland sogar noch übertroffen.
Für das Computerspiel „Sims 2 – Apartment-Leben“ nahm Perry ihren Song Hot N Cold neu, in der Fantasiesprache Simlisch, auf.
Am 6. November 2008 moderierte Katy Perry die MTV Europe Music Awards 2008 und gewann die Auszeichnung als Bester Newcomer. Für den ECHO 2009 war Katy Perry in der Kategorie "Hit des Jahres" nominiert. Nachdem eher mäßigen Erfolg der dritten Singleauskopplung Thinking of you veröffentlicht Perry ab Mitte 2009 die Single Waking up in Vegas, die bereits kurz nach der Veröffentlichung in den USA den Erfolg von Thinking of you übertroffen hat. Auch im Jahr 2009 durfte Perry, als Einzige in der Geschichte der MTV European Music Awards, zum zweiten Mal die wichtigste europäische Awardshow moderieren. Die EMAs 2009 fanden in Berlin statt.
Am 13. November 2009 erschien ein CD/DVD-Mitschnitt ihres MTV Unplugged-Konzertes, aufgenommen am 22. Juli 2009 in New York.
