Florence and the Machine ist das Künstler-Pseudonym der britischen Singer-Songwriterin Florence Welch (* 28. August 1986 in London; bürgerlich Florence Mary Leontine Welch).
Biografie
Aufgewachsen in Camberwell, Südlondon, besuchte Welch das dortige Camberwell College of Arts, an dem sie jedoch ihre Ausbildung im Bereich Art Foundation abbrach, um sich ihrer Musikkarriere zu widmen.
Bekannt wurde sie durch ihre Auftritte beim BBC Introducing auf dem texanischen Festival South by Southwest am 13. März 2008 sowie als Vorband für MGMT. Es folgten Auftritte bei Musikfestivals in Glastonbury, Reading und Leeds.
Ihr Debütalbum Lungs erschien am 6. Juli 2009 in Deutschland. Jeweils vier der dreizehn Stücke des Albums wurden von James Ford beziehungsweise Paul Epworth produziert. Gemanaged wird Welch von Mairead Nash von den Queens of Noize. Am 18. Februar 2009 wurde ihr der zweite „Critics Choice“ Brit Award (den ersten erhielt 2008 die Sängerin Adele) verliehen, der nur Künstlern zuerkannt wird, die noch kein Debütalbum veröffentlicht haben.
Im Januar und Februar 2009 ist sie außerdem neben Friendly Fires, Glasvegas und White Lies im Line-up der NME-Awards-Tour des britischen Musikmagazins New Music Express vertreten.
Der Namensanhang and the Machine in Welchs Bühnennamen impliziert zwar, dass sich der Name auf Welch und ihre Band bezieht, laut offizieller Biographie auf ihrer Webseite kann sich Florence and the Machine jedoch auf alles von Welch allein mit ihren Instrumenten bis hin zu Welch mit ihrer siebenköpfigen Live-Band beziehen.
Musik
Ihre Musik kann als Indiepop/-rock bezeichnet werden, mit Ähnlichkeiten sowohl zu Lily Allen und Kate Nash als auch zu Bat for Lashes. In einer früheren Pressebiographie beschrieb Welch ihre Musik als „die Musik, die Lily [Allen] oder Kate [Nash] machen würden, wenn sie eingeschlossen in einem Käfig voller Schlangen im Keller eines Beerdigungsinstituts in Louisiana aufgewachsen wären“ („She makes the kind of music Lily or Kate would make if they'd grown up locked in a cage full of snakes in the basement of a Louisiana funeral home“). Ihre Texte sind häufig sarkastisch und ironisch. Mitte 2009 trat Welch zumeist mit einer siebenköpfigen Begleitband auf, einige Auftritte bestreitet sie jedoch auch allein oder mit einem Schlagzeuger und einem Gitarristen.
An einem Teil ihrer Songs und Texte ist der Blur-Bassist Alex James beteiligt.Mit Kid Harpoon coverte sie den Springsteen-Hit I'm going down. Ihr bisher erfolgreichster Song ist ein Cover des 1991 erschienenen You got the love von The Source und Candi Staton, den Florence and the Machine musikalisch sehr nah am Original aufnahmen.
Kiss with a Fist fand in einem TV-Werbeclip von Vodafone Verwendung. Am 6. Juli 2009 erschien ihr Debütalbum Lungs.
Außerdem wirkt sie auf dem Soundtrack zu Eclipse - Bis(s) zum Abendrot mit. Der Song, der darauf zu hören ist, trägt den Titel Heavy In Your Arms.
Zweites Album
Nach dem großen Erfolg ihres Debütalbums wollte Florence Welch das zweite Album im Januar 2010 aufnehmen.Im Februar erschien erst einmal ein offizielles Mash-up ihres Songs You've Got the Love mit Dirtee Cash von Dizzee Rascal, das den Erfolg der beiden Einzellieder übertraf und Platz 2 der Charts belegte.
