Kate Nash (* 6. Juli 1987 in London) ist eine englische Singer-Songwriterin.

Biografie

Geboren und aufgewachsen ist Kate Nash in North Harrow im Nordwesten Londons. Sie lernte in ihrer Jugend Klavierspielen, belegte als Abschlussfach in der Schule unter anderem Musik und studierte anschließend an der BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology.

Ihr eigentliches Berufsziel war Schauspielerin, jedoch bestand sie die Aufnahmeprüfung an einer Schauspielschule in Bristol nicht. Nach einer wegen eines Beinbruchs erzwungenen Pause fand sie kurz darauf Muße zum Songschreiben und sie beschloss, es als Musikerin zu versuchen.

Nach einigen Auftritten und Veröffentlichung einiger Stücke über MySpace kam sie 2006 bei einem kleinen Londoner Label unter. Im Februar 2007 erschien die Doppelsingle Carolina's A Victim / Birds und gleichzeitig ging Nash auf eine landesweite Tour. Die nur in Vinyl und in begrenzter Stückzahl veröffentlichte Single schaffte es nicht in die Charts, obwohl das zugehörige Video bei MTV2 lief.

Daraufhin nahm das Polydor-Sublabel Fiction Records sie unter Vertrag. Es folgte eine zweite Tour und nach mehreren Auftritten bei großen Festivals wie in Glastonbury erschien im Juni ihre zweite Single Foundations. Sie erreichte damit auf Anhieb den zweiten Platz der britischen Charts, den sie mehrere Wochen halten konnte. Aufgrund des durchschlagenden Erfolges der Single entschloss sich die Plattenfirma das Debütalbum Made Of Bricks früher als geplant herauszugeben, zumal es schon vor der Veröffentlichung illegal im Internet zu finden war. Dennoch schaffte das Album im August 2007 den Sprung an die Spitze der britischen Album-Charts.

Musik

Die Karriere von Kate Nash zeigt Parallelen zum Erfolg von Lily Allen aus dem Jahr 2006. Beide stammen aus London, was an ihrem Akzent in ihren Liedern deutlich zu hören ist. Beide schreiben ihre Lieder selbst und verpacken darin persönliche und alltägliche Geschichten. Und beide haben zur Eigenwerbung das Internetportal MySpace erfolgreich genutzt.

Anders als bei Allen ist Nashs Musik rockiger und geht mehr in Richtung Indie-Rock. Neben der Gitarre setzt sie zudem vor allem Klavier und Synthesizer ein.
