Biografie
Die Tochter orthodoxer Juden (ihr Vater betrieb Handel mit koscheren Lebensmitteln) verließ mit 16 Jahren die Schule und die USA, lebte in Israel in einem Kibbuz und diente drei Monate bei den israelischen Streitkräften.

Danach kehrte sie in die USA zurück, um zu studieren, was sie jedoch aufgab. Bei einem Autounfall fiel sie für kurze Zeit ins Koma.

1976 hatte sie ihre erste Rolle als Wonder Girl Drusilla in der Serie Wonder Woman. Im Kino hatte sie ihr Debüt in Slumber Party 57. 1982 wurde sie für Ein Offizier und Gentleman erstmals für den Oscar nominiert, zwei weitere Nominierungen folgten. Im gleichen Jahr sprach sie die Stimme des Außerirdischen in E.T. Ihre Rolle als krebskranke Tochter Emma in Zeit der Zärtlichkeit brachte ihr Weltruhm ein.

Von 1986 bis 1990 war Winger mit Timothy Hutton verheiratet. Aus dieser Ehe stammt ihr Sohn Emmanuel Noah Hutton (* 1987). 1996 heiratete sie den Filmemacher Arliss Howard, mit dem sie ihren zweiten Sohn Gideon Babe Ruth Howard (* 1997) hat.

Nach Information des Autors arbeitet sie momentan an einem Drehbuch zu "Drop City" von T. C. Boyle mit.
