Deborah „Debbie“ Harry (* 1. Juli 1945 in Miami, Florida, USA) ist eine US-amerikanische Sängerin und Schauspielerin. Ihre Karriere begann sie als Rock 'n' Roll-Sängerin, doch der internationale Durchbruch gelang ihr erst als Sängerin der New Wave-Band Blondie.

Leben

Frühe Jahre

Harry wuchs in New Jersey auf und zog mit 19 Jahren nach New York, wo sie ihr Geld als Tänzerin, Kosmetikerin und Playboy-Bunny (eine Art Hostess) verdiente.[1] Debbie Harry trat anfänglich recht regelmäßig im CBGB auf, einem Punk-Rock-Club in New York, der damals bereits als „In-Schuppen“ für die Punkszene galt. Außerdem arbeitete sie als Kellnerin in „Max's Kansas City“,[1] dem Lieblingslokal von Andy Warhol („Ich bediente Andy Warhol, Jimi Hendrix und Miles Davis“).

Die Ära mit Blondie

Musikalisch startete Harry Ende der 1960er Jahre mit der Folk-Band „Wind in the Willows“. Später wurde sie Mitglied der Band „The Stilettos“ als sie den Gitarristen Chris Stein kennenlernte, mit dem sie 1974 „Angel and the Snake“ gründete, die später in Blondie umbenannt wurde. Die Band avancierte mit ihr und Stein zu einem Hit des New Yorker Künstlermilieus, ehe der Formation Ende der 1970er Jahre auch der internationale Durchbruch gelang. Obwohl Debbie Harry mit ihren wilden und exzessiven Punk-Auftritten alles dafür tat, dass Blondie als Punk-Band bezeichnet wurde, wurden sie und Blondie dennoch zum Idol der New-Wave-Ära. Ihre wasserstoffblonden Haare wurden schnell zu ihrem Markenzeichen und von den Fans vielfach kopiert. In Verbindung mit ihren Fotomodell-Aktivitäten (z. B. als Modell von „Alien“-Schöpfer H.R. Giger) konnte darüber hinaus der Bezug zur doch recht anarchischen Punk-Szene nicht länger aufrechterhalten werden. Mit dem Start des Musiksenders MTV wurde Blondies Karriere weiter gefördert, da Blondie zu dieser Zeit als eine der ersten Rock-Bands Videos produzierte und auf MTV ausstrahlen ließ und auf diese Weise sehr schnell einem Massenpublikum bekannt wurde.

Im Jahr 1978 erschien die Single "Little GTO / Holocaust On Sunset Blvd." (D-Line) von einer Gruppe namens "New York Blondes". Die A-Seite ist eine Coverversion des alten Ronny & The Daytonas-Hits "G.T.O.", gesungen von Deborah Harry.[2] Über die noch unbekannte Deborah Harry berichtete erstmalig Klaus Harpprecht 1977 in einem Bericht für das ZDF über die US-amerikanische Musik und Theaterszene.

1981 veröffentlichte sie, des Blondie-Images bereits ein wenig überdrüssig, unter dem Namen Debbie Harry ihr erstes Soloalbum. „Koo Koo“ wurde von Nile Rodgers produziert, fand aber seinerzeit wenig Beachtung. 1983 trennte sich Blondie vorläufig, so dass sich Harry auf ihre Solokarriere konzentrieren konnte. 1986 folgte ihr zweites Album „Rockbird“, auf dem auch die Single French Kissin´ enthalten war. 1989 folgte „Def, Dumb and Blonde“ und 1993 ihr viertes und vorerst letztes Album als Solokünstlerin „Debravation“.

1998 meldete sich Blondie mit dem siebten Album „No Exit“ zurück und konnte mit dem Titel Maria einen weltweiten Charterfolg verbuchen.

Im Sommer 2007 nahm sie zusammen mit Cyndi Lauper und Erasure an der True Colors Concert Tour zu Gunsten der Human Rights Campaign teil. Am 26. Oktober 2007 erschien in Deutschland ihr neues Soloalbum "Necessary Evil".

Schauspielkarriere

Auch als Schauspielerin trat sie immer wieder in Erscheinung. So spielte sie in dem John Waters-Film Hairspray eine Frau, die auch vor einem Bombenattentat nicht zurückschreckt, um ihre Tochter in einem Tanzwettbewerb weiter zu bringen. 1997 spielte sie unter dem Regisseur Adam Bernstein in Six Ways to Sunday neben Norman Reedus (als Harry Odum) die weibliche Hauptrolle der Kate Odum, der sie 2002 die Darstellung der vom Leben gezeichneten Mutter einer Sterbenden in Mein Leben ohne mich folgen ließ.

Gemeinsam mit Victor Bockris und Chris Stein schrieb sie 1982 das Buch Making Tracks: The Rise of Blondie.
