Meg Ryan

Meg Ryan ist die Tochter von Harry Hyra und Susan Jordan, geb. Duggan. Ryan hat drei Geschwister: Dana, Annie und Andrew. Im Alter von 15 Jahren trennte sich die Familie vom Vater. Die Ehe der Eltern wurde 1976 geschieden und Meg Ryan wuchs bei ihrem Vater auf. Über ihre Mutter, u. a. Schauspiellehrerin, wurde sie Mitglied in der Screen Actors Guild und zwar unter dem Mädchennamen ihrer Großmutter als Meg Ryan anstatt Meg Hyra. Sie studierte u. a. an der New York University Kommunikationswissenschaften. Die Finanzierung des Studiums führte sie zur Schauspielerei. Bereits unter ihrem Künstlernamen Meg Ryan bekam sie 1982 die Rolle der Betsy Stewart Montgomery Andropoulos in der Daily Soap As the World Turns, die sie bis 1984 spielte. Ihre erste Filmrolle bekam sie 1981 in Reich und berühmt.

Nach mehreren Fernseh- und kleineren Kinofilmen gelangen 1986 mit Top Gun und 1989 mit der Hauptrolle in der Komödie Harry und Sally die ersten großen Erfolge, und spätestens mit French Kiss (1995) hatte ihre Karriere ihren Zenit erreicht. Zu einem hohen Beliebtheitsstatus trugen außerdem zwei von insgesamt drei Filmen mit Tom Hanks, Schlaflos in Seattle (1993) und e-m@il für Dich (199 bei. In fast allen ihrer erfolgreichen Filme besetzte sie die Filmrolle der charmanten und romantischen Frau. In manchen ihrer Filme (vor allem jüngeren Datums) brach sie jedoch aus dieser Rolle aus. In When a Man Loves a Woman spielt sie beispielsweise eine alkoholabhängige Mutter, in In Sachen Liebe eine rachsüchtige Ex-Geliebte und in Mut zur Wahrheit hat sie eine Nebenrolle als Captain der US-Armee. Diese Filme wurden meist vom Publikum nicht beachtet oder von den Filmkritikern negativ beurteilt, wie auch 2004 beim Film Die Promoterin. 2003 übernahm sie eine Rolle in dem Erotikthriller In the Cut.

Meg Ryan heiratete 1991 den Schauspieler Dennis Quaid, mit dem sie zuvor in zwei Filmen vor der Kamera stand. Nach einer Affäre mit Russell Crowe wurde die Ehe am 16. Juli 2001 geschieden.

Dennis Quaid und Meg Ryan haben ein gemeinsames Kind namens Jack Henry (* 24. April 1992). Mit Jack lebt Ryan derzeit in einem Haus in Los Angeles, hat aber auch ein Appartement in New York. Am 25. Januar 2006 adoptierte sie ein chinesisches Mädchen.
